what are the options for carrying the spare wheel atm it in the van but would love a rear mount.

any ideas what these cost and where do they come from, also where did vw mount them on the 16 syncro

I think £350 is the price.

thats the kiddy. seen them doubled up one on each side too. though £350 is a lot of money,£700 for a pair.

better get saving. or may have a go at making one myself although i imagine it`ll take a lot of time to get it right.

does the 16 wheel not fit under the front like the 2wd vans cant imagine vw just throwing the spare in the back.

I am confident that the brackets that I have been slaving over are stronger than the ones vw made. I would lift a van off a top hinge!

An option for the syncro was on the RH rear C pillar at the rear The Bays have a front mounted wheel which will fit the T25 wheel you could fit this and bolt your wheel on to it, or mount it to the tailgate and use a copper tube on one of the gas struts to lock the gate open as the strut wont hold the weight of the wheel, or up rate the gas strut but if you open it after you removed the wheel it will spring open and chin you one!

Have bolted mine to the rear door now & up-rated shocks. Out of interest could someone tell which is the A, B, C, D pillars?

Start from front.
A is windshield
B is front of sliding door
C is back of sliding door
D is back corner
All are on both sides of van.

a piller starts at the front and you work your way back.


dont like the idea of hanging on the rear door as i feel it`ll strain the hindges even if you up rated the struts.
looks like it`ll be a roof rack mount for now untill i can afford the proper job on the back.

not just the hinges... also the latch. Not a good idea me thinks.

I was thinking of fitting the bay spare wheel carrier to my back hatch and uprating the shocks myself. Ive heard other people doing it but never heard anyone with their back door falling off as a result.

When I finally get my a*** in gear and clear out the shed Ill have a genuine VW rear carrier for sale. However none of 'em are any good if you dont have the body strenghtened where they bolt on. Russel has a left and a right on his gold van

a syncro that can remove it's own gearbox and lift it onto a truck to bring it to me for rebuilding, nice trick Pete

I dont think so...... the whole wheel is held on by two welds. But what would I know? Im only an engineer!! Have a look at the VW one to see how its done.

As for the tyre hanging off the rear hatch ...

I had a "Paulchen" bike carrier once which hung from the top of the hatch. After a holiday with two bikes on Irish roads the hinges were knackered.
