over reving , gearbox oil top up

Hello , ive got a 16td t25 thats over reving, when you change gear the revs stay the same, i can only get the revs to decrease if i use the break when in gear. The accelerator cable has been greased but no change, anyone got any ideas?
Also i know that the gearbox has a slight leak and its starting to make a noise when i change gear, probably due to lack of oil. Is it easy to top the oil up? Thanks for looking

Check that the cable/pump really is returning to idle first, you may need an assistant for this. The cable may be jamming as happened to me or the spring may not be springing at the pump. Get your head in the engine bay wile someone presses and releases the pedal and all should become clear.
No, gearbox oil is not an easy change but it's doable. Remove the filler plug first (on the off side of the gearbox near the top) as bimetalic sorosion can cuse this to be a bugger and you'll look silly with all the oil out and no way to fill it. Then drop the oil, warm gearbox is required. Fill the gearbox using a pipe up through the wheel arch and a funnel on the end. Again warm oil is way quicker than cold but it's still a long slow job.
Check the Wiki for how much to fill it but you'll need a five litre container of oil and you'll need to be on level ground to check how far from the fill hole it is. Use a bent bit of wire or your finger when it gets that far.
Oh, where is the leak? You'll want to be fixing that as a new (reconditioned) gearbox is an expensive item and second hand ones are not cheap and are an unknowable quantity.
Luck.

Thanks for the advice, im not sure where the leak is, the garage i use advised me on its mot that there was a leak but at that time it was only considered a keep an eye on it.
They told me it would be expensive to take apart. If it was only a seal gone probably £200 or for a replacement £600 !!!

Depends which seal but you may be able to do it yourself without major drama, at the high end of their quote you may be able to get Aiden to give your gearbox some love to more than just a weepy seal.
Fill in your location, join in and be sociable; someone will probably offer to come and give you a hand. If your in North Manchester bring it round to mine and I'll point and laugh while you try to fix it

appreciate the invite but id probably spend more on fuel and recovery charges than to get someone to fix it !! But you are right it is time to be more sociable so details will be entered, thanks for your time, take care

Check out the easy option first. Bet its the cable. We had same prob, one day the wife was driving and the cable jammed on. She did the natural thing and dipped the clutch, revved the nuts of it for a while before turning the ignition off. Blew the turbo cos of old engine with low oil presure etc etc. All whilst approching a roundabout. If you undo the cable at the pump end you should be able to push and pull it by hand. You will know if its knackered as it will be catching on the outer sleeve and you will be able to feel it.

Also check that the engine end of the throttle cable is seated correctly 1.9 DG? will have a metal "ball" on the end, but as they said more than likely it is sticking changing it is fairly easy. but make sure you have the right one for your engine as their is a different cable for LHD RHD diesel petrol etc etc etc
heres the wiki on it I am uploading some pictures at the moment...
