I know that the auto transmission fluid is checked after bringing the engine temperture up to operating levels but does anybody know what the dipstick should show when the engine is cold? thanks.

I would check your level after engine warm up.Reason why its got a torque convertor in the autobox that is filled with fluid when the engine is running .If after cooling down and the van is standing it can drain out and give a false reading.

Er... only you can judge that as thats why you are supposed to get the gearbox up to temp and then check... thats the procedure (however its stated in the manual), thats what you have to do... once you know the level is ok after checking correctly you can then make an estimate as to correctness after leaving over night..... but its a pure guess.. (My guess is that it will be higher "cold" as it wont be pumped to the torque converter and other parts... although it could be lower as it isnt warm...

ATF Level checking...as per the Bentley manual.

* ATF at operating temperature of 60 degrees(attained after driving approx 6 miles after a cold start)

* vehicle on a level surface.

*parking brake engaged.

* selector lever at "P"

* engine idling.

* use a lint free cloth to wipe dipstick.

* replace dipstick,then remove and check the level which should be inbetween the Max & Min marks.

* Top up accordingly...DO NOT OVERFILL!

Only use Dexron or Dexron II

I did a change on mine last weekend 'cos it was slipping in first, kind of like riding the clutch in a manual. Had to be carefull pulling out as it didn't always move off quickly. Once it had moved up it seemed to be ok-ish. Changed the oil, which was a bit grey and sludgy, and it had what looked like iron fillings in it. Needless to say it still slips! I'm gonna check it's all adjusted as it should be. It doesn't always slip though, about half and half. Could it be the box or the torque convertor? I gave the engine a service in case it was down on powere as I know this can effect it, but no change. So keep a look out in the wanted section for an auto box-it'll be me. The wife said it'll be my christmas present. I wanted an i-phone!

I did all that, new sump gazsket and all. Still slips like a mother. I checked the level after I drove it about a mile, but I might try it the Bentley way as listed above - ie, about six miles. Ah well, it's only money!
