Testing an auto box.

Hello all.
I'm after a 2.1 auto caravelle with PAS for the better half's main transport.
Have never owned or even driven a T3 auto & was wondering what I should do & look out for when taking one on a test drive before purchasing.
Are there any tell-tale signs of trouble ahead?
Are they expensive to get overhauled?

Check the link below out - there is a company mentioned that reconditions automatic gearboxes for T25s ... worth giving them a call to get some info and I am told they are nice a friendly too

When you get some answers, please let us know them so we can add this to the WIKI (see top of this page!)
UPDATE: I called them

- Seems typical problems are not changing up or down at the right time or getting stuck in a gear. The way to check is to cross check speed and rpm - 60 rpm = 3000 rpm on a 2.1 3 speed auto box and 70 is around 3500 rpm. Also check it moves away in 1st without much delay - but if the vehicle has been standing for a few days it might need 30 seconds to warm up - especially the torque converter. Kickdown should work - but if it does not, it might be an adjustment problem.
An overhaul and recondition of an auto box with a full strip down and replacement of all worn parts is an expensive job (after engine replacement) - typically £450 +VAT
Hope these comments help.
