We've just had a wonderful couple of days on our first campervan adventure! Unfortunately, Hubby and I both suffered from back ache caused by the hard mattress. Has anyone tried anything to solve this? Do mattress toppers work?

As an Upholsterer i would say just how old is your foam? For a good kip you need at least four inches, if you want a different, softer density, then you should be able to get a sheet from Peter Cook (Petco) if you take measurements, they dont mind selling to non trade and have branches all over UK. Im not that impressed with the one inch boating stuff you get in the dubs, you have to be hammered to sleep on that regularly.

Mattress topper sounds a pretty good idea they do make a ropey mattress better but can be sweaty.

thanks for that. Will having softer density foam make the seating saggy when bed folded up? Good advice about sweatyness- will have to dip hubby in antipersperant

In my westie, I use a hardish foam sheet over the rear section where the engine cover is. This fills the full width of the space, lives underneath the normal matress thing, and acts as a noise supressor for the engine bay as well.

With this in place, I have not noticed a problem, maybe this could be tried as a quick and simple option? The foam sheet is about 25mm thick, and its the sort of foam that is used in tool boxes, so it is quite dense (matches the occupant )

We bought a futon mattress from Ikea. Cut it down one side and then restiched it to make it fit the 3/4 bed. Because its made for a futon it sort of hinges with three panels so it folds up and fits perfectly on the shelf above the engine bay. When pulled out it sits on top of the seat cushions so we have about eight inches of mattress. Really comfy.

We bought a 2" thick memory foam mattrss topper from Flea Bay before our two week summer hols and have never slept so comfortably in a van.

I thought all this backache was part of the VW thing, along with campers cramp, freezing one's dollacks off and all other nasty things! I saw someone using an air mattress once and thought this was for tents!!! (or wussies). any of you big fellas out there who use an air mattress please disregard the last insinuation

They say life is easy if you can keep cold, tiredness and hunger at bay. In my Autohomes Komet with its propex heating, grill (for cheese) and mattress topper, I think I have it covered

I sleep better on my westy matress than me own bed.
And I aint the first to admit it.....

Got our 4" foam from Dunelm, Both me and the mrs were surprised how well we slept.

£40 1"thick memory foam mattress topper from fleabay, put a cover on it, roll it up tight when not in use and stays on the engine cover at the back....


makes sleeping a lot more comfy on our hard full width R&R Velle bed...

Was bought for the Westy as the Germans seem to like sleeping on park benches
