Shell Island tommorrow, just filled it up.....Nasty smell of petrol....looked underneath......a kin great puddle of my money lying on the concrete. Drive home and the leak has stopped.
It's the rotten on top syndrome.
Question 1

...Seeing as my gauge is faulty, how much fuel approx do you fill up with so as not to lose anymore ?????
Question 2

....Who sells them ??? It's a 2 ltr Air-cooled 1981 CU engine.
Thanks, hopefully from Shell Island.
PS.......I was rather hoping I would get a couple of months out of the old girl before the next episode & I took it back to Steve at Gasure.....Was only there yesterday for a new starter

I have said problem too, but my gauge works. I stick £30 in when the needle hits 1/4 full. that last a while.
Not much help when your gauge aint working. Does the trip still work?

I have a no trip speedo......my gauge works to a degree.....You fill the tank it shows a 1/4 full then takes a long time to go down...I'm pretty used to the gauge now
I think If I fill it up I will just put around £30 in thanks fella

Is it rotten or just the breather hoses/pipes perished/rusted away...
only way to tell is to drop it, but that means dropping the fuel... bit of a pain...since its now "full"

I only looked underneath briefly......But it does seem to be coming from the top of the tank......This is all new to me.....I've never given fuel to the environment before

I had same problem when I brimmed my tank, turned out to be a perished hose going to the breather tank, cost £1 for a bit of fuel hose and 15mins to fit

Yeah this happened with my old camper. I went and bought a new tank only to have to send it back and suffer a surcharge

Same solution for me too - perished breather pipe hose was p*&^%$ng fuel out (probably due to the big hole in it

)
VW OE pipe is very nice - rubber now onoutside as well as inside the reinforcing threads.
Hope this is your problem too.
