round-headed bolt removal

Any advice on how I can remove this bolt at the top of my starter-motor would be greatly appreciated. It seems to be almost entirely round now. Apologies for the poor picture quality, but it's hard to take a decent picture of something you can't actually see.

Can`t remember if thats the one but if it is you could lock some vice/mole grips onto it and undo it from inside the engine bay.....??

thats a D bolt it should "lock up" against the starter body. get someone with an extension bar to push against it while you crank the nut off.
experienced vw'ers sort of pull the nut toward your self as you undo it.

if you still have trouble, try a pair of mole grips (dunno what you call em here) and grip the bolt end on, the grips will lock against the starter.
ok?

Ah, so there's a nut on the other side is there? That makes more sense. Not being able to see above the starter motor, and never having done this before, I'm not completely familiar with the set-up. I couldn't feel the nut on the other side, but I'll go and have another try.

Thanks! 8)

yes theres a 17mm nut on the other side, turn it anti clock wise and it should come off! have you disconnected your battery/s cos you don'"idiot" that thick wire touching some metal work or firework nite will come early!

Battery disconnected already! I learnt about that kind of thing after making my ignition permanently live when I was testing the brake-light switch (although the battery did need to be connected for that, I should have been more careful).

That Wiki article was helpful too - thanks.
