Hi everyone, new to the club, have just bought my first VW.It's a 1.9 water cooled with a dg engine.I was wondering if it's possible to tell the age of the engine from the numbers stamped in the engine bay as i would like to know if it was the original engine.

Stamped on the engine... yes... it is within a month/2 month period IIRC..
I cant access the data at the mo, but someone will be along in a bit that can... whats the number...

Let me put it this way .... a certain 1989 van I happen to know quite well has a DG number 157*** . Which would mean the engine in your's (original or not) is 116,000+ earlier off the line.
PS there's no guarantee that mine's the original engine either though ... who can tell when you buy a 15 year old van

The info IS available to tell when the engine was first made... if it happens to be around the same time the chassis was built its a good bet its the original.. my 1983 Velle, had its original.. (I still have the original engine but its been replaced with a rebuilt unit

Thanks very much for the info guy's.It's a 83 camper so there's a chance it was the original engine 52,000 on the clock.

Yes, but is it the original set of clocks

Our's reads 45,000 miles more than The Bus has really done.

And early clocks only went up to 99999 so it's more likely done an extra 1000000 more than you think
