Can anyone offer any advise for our 1984 VW transporter.

We fitted a new starter motor 6 months ago and have replaced it now 3 times. Each time the starter works fine for 2 months and then packs in (wont turn over and makes rup sound).

Ive just fitted the third and noticed that the copper ring that fits into the housing to hold the starter in line (bush?) has worn down and only half of it was there. The problem is that each time ive fitted a new starter i replaced this bush. Thinking back to the second motor i seem to remember that that was also worn but not as much.

Does anyone know why the bush is wearing down so quickly and offer any advise on how to repair.

Many Thanks

did you soak the bushes in oil prior to fitting?

Maybe there is an alignment problem.. they shouldnt wear that quickly... and where are you getting your "new" starters from?

alignment, check bolts that hold the gearbox and engine together! or bolts that hold starter on or damaged bent rusted etc, surface of gearbox that starter sits against is flush and smooth with no obstructions, clutching (no pun) at straws but maybe flywheel not true/loose?
