Hello All,

A few months back, I got a new engine from Elite VW. It has been running great, but there are two slight issues:

1. Once warmed up, it idles a bit too fast.
2. When it is cold, it is slightly rough. This only lasts about 20 seconds and then it is fine, but I fear it may get worse as the weather gets colder.

So, Elite have offered to take a look at it, but I would prefer just to sort it myself as it is probably a part that is not covered by the new engine warranty and I would prefer not to pay someone to fix it (also, it is a pain for me to drive all the way out there). Any thoughts on what the problem part might be, what needs to be replaced/adjusted? Does this sound like something that will cause damage to the engine if I don't get it sorted right away? As always, thanks for the great advice...

ummmm,

I would take up their offer.....they do require you to take it for service....join the two trips....

That's kind of what I am thinking, but I still have 2 months before it is due for the first six month service. If I take it in now, I will end up paying for something, then it will be due for the £65 6 monther shortly after. Kind of hoping it's okay to put it off for a couple of months...

DG or DJ engine?

DG carb, would have been prudent to rebuild carb while it was apart...
setting of the idle /choke unit neds carefull adjustment.. also if you are used to modern stuff just starting and running.. old vehicles dont do this for you..
there are no "controls" to make things right on an old vehicle.. 20 seconds of roughness sounds pretty good for most... and quite often you will find a little throttle is needed to help "clear its throat".

With the carb engines from cold you should push the throttle to the floor and release before turning the key.. this "resets" the choke mech, before starting.

Fi engines.. well could be anything from a sticky idle control valve or a lazy injector to a sensor problem or just a poor contact..

Sorry, I should have said, DJ engine, so it is a bit hard to diagnose...

Fast idle that cannot be corrected with the idle speed screw is in my experience down to the temp sensor malfunctioning. Its just about the most important sensor and encrichens the mixture and increases the idle speed if its not working.

Also poor running at start up could be down to a weepy injector letting a small amount of fuel into a cylinder. This would then clear after a bit of black smoke, and normal service resumed.

The bentley manual is very good as is the haynes manual and it is a matter of going through each component to illiminate parts working correctly. It is time consuming, but well worth it as you will gain so much knowledge about your engine. This will ultimately make it more reliable as you can diagnose problems before they leave you stranded.
