New running problem, advice needed.

On the way back from crabfest the engine (1.9dg) has decided it is going to race considerably at tickover. on further investigation after getting home i find it drops to what i consider normal tickover spped if i disconnect the vac advance from the distributer.
any suggestions what to look at 1st? and could it be related to the cutting out problem it has had for quite some time but seems to have disappeared becaues the racing tickover is keeping it going?

Could be sucking in air from somewhere, or the vac advance on the distributor could be malfunctioning. If I remember right if you suck on the dizzy you should be able to get the advance moving, could be stuck in maximum advance. If you have got access to a timing light I would start there. Could also be the accelerator cable, if it s tight now it will raise the tickover, so check you have free play when throttle closed, check that there is nothing in the carb keeping the butterly open.

I had a raised tickover on my air cooled and it was a perished t-piece (number 12 on the pic below). Dunno if yours even has this but thought I'd risk embarrassement by offering it up as a possible solution!

Maybe it as simple as a sticking throttle cable. Open hatch while it s racing and pull back/down on the little thingy with cable on right side of carb as you face it. If it idles down to normal tickover, you've found the problem.

ok, with a bit of help from wasserleaker this morning we have cheked the timing, choke and throttle cable and cant see a problem. the vac on the dizzy does move when you suck on it.
will have another look at the choke and check what happens if i remove the advance pipe when its cold tomorow.
any other thoughts?
