Petrol smell in cab

I have a faint smell of petrol in the cab, especially when I have just filled up and the tank is over 3/4 full. My engine is the 2100 fuel inj. (1989). I have checked and found no leaks in the fuel lines, rubber seals, or corrision in tank etc; also no fuel leaks on floor overnight. Has anyone any suggestions where it can be coming from, or experienced similar smells.

The top of the tank collects water and rots on top it could be leaking out of there i'd hazzard a guess

Check the rubber collar behind fuel cap that connects to tank pipe, these perish & leak--also check rubber pipes on expantion tanks in front wheel arches-they also perish.

Here's a link to the tank on vagcat (registration needed to see picture and part numbers)

Stuckin88 is refering to part no 3 on the above diagram
The seal that seals the filler neck to the tank had perished on ours (no 7) (fuel spilled out whenever we filled the tank up to the top) plus the rubber grommets x3 (no9) on the top of the tank that secure the breater pipes to the top of the tank had come way too meaning vapour was escaping there. Breater pipes from breather tank to fuel tank were all perished too.
If it persists the best option may be to drop the tank and have a right good look
All the seals are still available and VW vancentre in preston are very helpful.
