Hi
Refitting my 1980 westy and after taking out the fridge unit to check for rust I found that the panel (all along that side of the van) and the floor is waxoyled
It looks like the unit has never been taken out before so I was wondering if anyone knows if Westfalia or VW did this?

Also there is practically no rust

VW started to use cavity wax injection treatment on cars in 1979 & I believe that they started to treat vans from around 1986/87. Maybe it was Wesfalia who treated your van, otherwise it must have been a previous owner.

yep
i have to say i was surprised
my westy is a '79-80 one of the first with the all red rear lights
i have a small bit of rust on the outside seam and i figured it was coming from the inside out, but now I doubt it
will be running a photo blog of the work soon

VW did an in factory treatment known as 'zebarting' (spelling?). My camper had it done and has next to no rust.

If your van was built before 1986/87 it won't have been treated.

Well if your van's an '83, Herr Volkswagen didn't do it.
My Auto-Sleeper built in October 1983 wasn't treated at the VW favtory & the A/S works don't appear to have done anything. There is however some after market Waxoyl treatment underneath the van which has obviously been applied by a previous owner.

My guess is Westfalia when they converted the bus into a camper.

took the whole floor up today (photos on other link) all waxoyled! and the seams on the other side of the van are all waxoyled too so it had to be done at the time of fitting as the wooden floor was stuck to some of the waxoyl
