got myself a set of mangels (white) for the camper.


Got up early, went to tyre fitting place.

Got tyres taken off steelies, balanced and fitted front and rear £40!!
Great!

Drove away, rears swimming all over everywhere. Turns out there are two small bolts in t=he rear wheel hubs that stop it from sitting flush (is this my axel nut nomination...?) Felt a bit daft I did...

Got to get the mangels drilled to accommodate said nuts. Bless them, the garage took the tyres off the manges, refitted to steelies, balanced and replaced for nowt.

Anyways, I would like to know what these two bolts do....and why aren't alloys affected??

The tyre place should have realised the problem when fitting......!!!!

They hold the drum to the hub.. you can get away with them not being there... but just have to be carefull when changing wheels you dont yank the brake drum off with the wheel..
Dont drill the Mangles....
Alloys etc are not affected as they usually have a "cavity" on the mounting face and are a lot thicker.. the mangles are just a flat bit of steel at the mounting face...

looks like you will be going back to get the tyres swapped....


Oh.. but you might want to checkmthat the mounting face of the wheels isnt bent now... bet they used an air gun to raz them up with....

Alloys are affected. I just took the bolts out. They're only there to hold the drum in place when removing a wheel but it doesnt move anyway!
Option 1:- Take out bolts and refit wheels.
Option 2:- Drill hole in wheel where bolt head goes, just make sure wheel goes back on where bolt head is!
Bet you wish you posted this before you got them changed back eh?

back to tyre fitting place now....

they are now on....following removal of said bolts. The drums didn't fall off, either.....must be some rust holding them on....
