1.6TD engine number

I need to find the engine number on my 1,6TD Doka-1990.The german manual I've got tells me its between the diesel pump and the vacuum pump, sort of under where the coolant hoses enter the engine. There's nowt stamped on mine there although it looks like a nice flat surface to put one.Is it likely to be anywhere else? There is a number plate glued to the diesel pump(004651) right next to the timing belt casing.Could this perchance be it?Maybe it fell off and was stuck on.What formdoes the number take?Is it punched on or is it a plate? I'd like to find one or registration could be pretty tricky. It's not shown on the original german registration documents either, unless it's the same as the chassis number.
Any help would be gratefully received.

Thanks.
Al

The flat place as you described is the right place, but the number is`nt punched in deep, more like etched in and any rusting soon removes it.It`s awkward to get to and if you can scrape, clean, you MIGHT get to read it.It will start JX then numbers.Good luck.

Replacement engines might not have one or as John says it could be very feint. Tried doing a brass rubbing kinda thing over that oval flat area?

Don't think its anwhere else other than the logbook or original VW records

Thanks.I'll try the rubbing but if anything is there it's very feint. The VW museum has all the records and I've checked with them but they will only release information to an official body like DVLA,not to the likes if us folk!

Thanks for that.Mine definitely has nothing as clear as that.Thankfully (and to my complete surprise) when I went to DVLA to ask for help they told me I could enter NOT KNOWN in that box on the form.So all's well that......Now just the matter of some postal strike holding up my insurance then we'll be on the road!!
