push rod tubes

My 2ltr Aircooled needs new push rod tubes as they are leaking oil really bad.
The mechanic says he won't be able to replace them without snapping the bolts for the exhaust on the head to get into them.
I have heard of telescopic tubes which you can fit without removing the exhaust but can't seem to source them anywhere.
Is there any other way?

Telescopic ones not so good, they leak from new. Only to be used in emergency really.
Take off rocker cover, remove rockers. Old tubes can be removed by sliding outwards after removal of the pushrod retaining wire. Just reverse sequence for re-fitting.
Job done!

Sack your mechanic, the 2.0ltr Aircooled does not need the exhaust removing to change the pushrod tubes, nor do the telescopic ones fit the Aircooled engine, they are designed for the water boxer so that you don't have to remove the head to change a leaky tube.
Remove the rocker cover, remove the rocker shaft by undoing 2 x 11mm nuts take out the pushrodes and the tubes will come out completely, replace as necesary and make sure you use a good quality seal set for them, no sealant just a touch of grease to help them slide into place.

Yeah.. 2L aircooleds dont need anything unbolting.. just pop the rocker covers off, undo rocker shafts and pull pushrods out.. undo the wire clip that holds them in.. then prob just to replace the "O" rings...
Maybe you mech doesnt know the engine very well...!!!

I have the CT engine and no, they're not the same, cylinder head off for those i'm affraid! Pushrod tubes for the 1.6 CT are not the same as for other engines either, different design for different head configuration.

Having problems finding the correct ones, any ideas?
And do you find the CT to be a right pain in the a$$ for getting bits?

Can be a bit of a problem getting hold of bits but i cheated slightly when I modified mine. I got a whole new top end thats designed for a beetle engine... Heads, pistons and cylinders. Got a custom head with bigger valves and 30% more strength. Takes different plugs mind!
If its just the seals at the ends of the pushrod tubes you're after then you shouldnt have too much of a problem sourcing them.
Ps. All CT tubes are the same. Different for other engine codes though.
BigBoysToys do various pushrod tubes to fit yours, link below.

IIRC the CT ones are the same as the wbx... but typ 1 colapsable ones may be made to fit.. so you dont have to remove heads to do it.. just the rockers and then push rods, bend out offending tubes and slip in the collapsable
I would consider how much you might need to spend on the CT now and in the future, buefore attempting to do a job on it... parts are very hard to find now...

Ok different direction, what would i have to change to put in a 2lt air into my van (if i can get hold of one), or is there any other routes i should think of?
