Really simple wheel questions

What will be the effect of running wheels which have a tyre size of 195x14?
they are steels, not alloys.
Can you put the 185 tyre on them?
thanks

I'm running 195s on the rear to give slightly higher gearing for the AAZ.

Thanks for the response.....what does "slightly higher gearing" mean?
When i asked "what happens"....I was looking for the "blonde" answer - your speedo is out, you change gear quicker, drink more fuel (is that possible??) you bugger the suspension...etc etc
thanks for coming back, though!

Speedo will only be "out" if you change the size of your front wheels/tyres . In my case the result of using larger tyres on the rear is a drop in engine revs and better fuel consumption. Not noticed any ill affects of running this set up, plus a had a supply of 195 tyres. One day I might invest in a more suitable gearbox but this works fine for me!

possibly make speedo more accurate.. makes an underpowered engine worse.. (might not want to fit them on the 1.9) but the difference isnt too big..

Thinking about putting them on the 2.1, so that's good then. No problem with having 185 14 on the front, and 195 on the back then? Anything to improve fuel consumption!!
thanks folks

fuel consumption change negligable, acceleration slightly down, speedo now reading 100% accurate according to sat nav... , revs dropped by 150ish rpm in top gear...

im running on 195's on standard steel rims, and cant find any difference between them and the old 185 x 14's that were originally on there.
surely the gearing and speedo probs only occur when u change the height of the tyres . . .and not the width
Or maybe im very wrong . . .again

195 is the width of the tyre I have the same setup as you 185s on the front 195 on the rear 2.1 on carb runs fine. the aspect ratio will determine the rolling radius
more explained here
http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html although tyres quite often dont have the aspect ratio stamped on them your tyre pressure will be slightly loser I have mine 43 on front and back (back is usually higher)

A 195/80 is taller than a 185/80 (when it doesnt spec a ratio after the width its assumed as 80%.. )
for instance, the diameter of a 185r14 is 650mm a 205r 14 is 683mm (diameters can vary a few mm depending on what manufacturer) therefore gearing raised... if you go to a bigger rim diameter (eg 15") then a 205/70R15 would be the same size (near enough) as a 205r14...
I have used these as thats what I am running on my syncro... and you (I!) notice the difference when going from the 185's to the 205/70's...

The other thing is that the original factory rim for 185/14's is 5.5 inch wide, the one for 205/14's is 6 inches.
You can fit 195's on the 5.5" rim no problem (as I have), 205's would get very balloon-like and really need the wider rim.
I put 195's on the syncro because they look slightly less weedy than the 185's whele still being able to run the original rims.
Speedo is now pretty much accurate whereas it used to be "fast" by about 10% on the 185's

Now i'm confused, advice for me now please. I am going to fit some 16 inch Audi A4 alloys, already machined to fit the front. Iv'e had sourced for me some 205/65/16 van rated tyres, will these be ok or should i stick to a lower profile.
Cheers
Paul
Oh, its a 1.6 deisel by the way.

If you put 205/65/16 tyres on the overall diameter will be increased to 673mm (standard is 654mm) what you need is 205/60/16 this will give you 652mm.

I was going for the bigger tyre for two reasons. To fill up the wheel arch,to avoid lowering, and cos it was van rated wheras the 60/16 is only rated to 91. So the bigger tyre is not suitable?

They are suitable, it just depends on whether you want lower the gearing and how important the speedo being accurate is to you!
My fronts are 205/55/16's which are WAY too small due to being lowered and clearence issues (they are also rated at 91 which i know isn't ideal).
I'm sure Kev has got 205/60x16's that are van rated on his.
