Has anyone had any previous of rear mounted shelf carriers to be able to carry a vespa?
Spoke to a chap recently who had seen a carrier fitted to a tow bar fixing,that carried an auto scooter and would like this instead of towing a trailer.
Would be intreasted in buying one or if anyone could make one would like a qoute please.

Looked at some of these today at the Northern Motorcaravan Show in York.

Thing I can`t see being right is... your average tow vehicle has a maximum weight on the towball, specified by the manufacturer, of between 50kg and 90KG, so how it`s legal to fit something attached to the ball-hitch (that weighs about 50KG) and that is going to support something of around 150 - 200 KG is beyond me

If you tried to do this with a badly loaded (nose heavy) trailer or caravan you would be driving illegally due to overloading the rear axle of the tow vehicle. Plus it would handle like a pig

The trouble with those big ones mark is that they are very expensive - i was quoted at £500 for the job.

I have a scooter rack that bolts inbetween the tow bar ball and its mount. A guy makes them up for you (and gives you some extended bolts) after you give him the distance between your wheels - twas £70.

Cheers for pics Ringo thats just the ticket.Is it tricky to lift the scooter on?
Really fancy not having to tow trailer,so if could cover cost of getting that done for what i could raise for flogging my trailer would be well happy.Plus the savings on not having to pay for trailers on ferries would be great.

Theres a technique to putting the scooter on:

Hold front brake on with one hand and put the other in the front wheel, lift the front up and place it in the carrier.

Obviously, the rear of the scooter is heavier, but you need to find somewhere as low as possible on the scooter and lift it on.

Im used to doing it now but did have a few cuts and scrapes when i started!

Cheers for that mate,will now try to sell my trailer to fund purchase of a rack.Wont be taken scooter anywhere till next year again now so will have to see if lucky might be able buy secondhand one over winter.

I used to carry my Vespa P200E MK1 on a rear carrier, I bought a Dave cooper rack but a welder friend said he wouldnt trust it so I replaced it witrh a stronger one. So I'm interested to heard how the guy with the Dave Cooper rack has got on with it. I also noticed from the flickr photos that the scooter is not straped onto the top of the van, has that been ok? I would love to see pictures of how exactly you strap your scooter because I have really struggled with strapping my scooter on.

Yes - those photos dont show it strapped in properly....

Havent got and photos - but basically i made a cushion (out of an old camping roll mat) thats fits on the end of the handlebar - i then strap just below the headlight to the bumper mount with a good ratchet strap.

This seems to do the job.

The Dave cooper rack is holding up well - carried the scooter on the back for 7 weeks in france in 2005 no problems...
