An engine on ebay just sayes 1.6 turbo from a 1986 mk2 golf, and I cant find anywhere on here without knowing what engine code it has that tells me if it would fit a 1986 1.6 diesel t3? anyone know if it is a major job or possible without changing flywheels and things? Thanks conffused of Hampshire.

TD is JR . if its 'like for like' just swap over sump/engine mounts/hoses /oil pump/pick up etc etc . only thing you might have prob with is pump top - last 2 swaps ive done and put 'car' engines in , the pumps sit a little higher and foul the lid , you can either swap injection pump , change top for T25 one or cut small hole in lid. :D

Thanks for that, my current engine (Passat) is non turbo though, does that make a difference?

yep , as inlet/exhaust manifolds are different ( due to turbo ) . also air box is different and sump.you will have to spend a pile of £ before you start as all the bits you need are in the 'desirable' column and command strong money.the turbo may not be compatable with a JX manifold aswell, the list goes on  why not go for a 1Y ? i was looking into it recently and the 1.9 non turbo makes a tiny bit more torque than the 1.6td at lower revs.
someone n here or BY is getting well into 40mpg on a well set up 1Y compared to low/mid 30s on a TD :D

Is that a fairly straight forward swop? and what sort of doner car would I find a 1y?

never done it myself but if you search here and brickyard - loads have done it - apparently straight forward. you will find 1Y engines in most vws/seats from early/mid 90s . goofs and polios had em.probably easier and cheaper to get hold of than turdos!

Just a thought, as this engine on ebay is still only 99p and collection only 10miles from me, would the bottom end, as in not the head, of a turbo be the same as my 1.6 normally asperated? I rebuilt the head 2 years ago but the rings are now suspect.
