OK, these two items were recovered from the mag drain plug on a Syncro I've been working on.

Sorry about the size of the pics, but I'm hoping someone can ID these bits, so image clarity is important here.



I've been through the various gears and bearing that came out of my AVN box and I can find nothing thin enough to be these items. Maybe they're from the diff. If anyone knows what these are we'd appreciate knowing before the 'box goes back in!

Tom, these are the remains of one of the ball sleeves part number 091 301 120 - the selector shafts slide in these - they are fitted into the case or end shield as vw has it - see illus 42-10 on Etka/Etos etc..Bentley 35.113 in paper manual - maybe the same on pdf version I don't know.
I also found parts of one of these on my sump plug when I oil changed Beaker, yet it has the best gear change of all of mine - with evidence that it had been repaired so I hope they were just left over fragments from a previous failure. I also recovered about 1" of part of one of the outer lips of one of the syncro rings in two parts...but as I say it changes gear beautifully so I'm not worrying about it for now.
The part is only £2.33 + vat, but how much it would cost to fix I'd hate to think.

I found no sign of the balls the retainers hold and there wasn't enough ground swarf to indicate that they had been displaced and subsequently destroyed so maybe some damage is acceptable with these.

While I can't always stick to that maxim I can confirm that the van is now back on the road and the driver is enjoying a large portion of AAZ power through all four wheels!

Fortunately it's usually none too straight......

Those bits are often attached to drain plug magnets, par for the course.
Better stuck to the drain plug than floating 'round in the oil.
Never seems to cause any trouble.

As driver of said van I can confirm that the gearbox does indeed seem all good. A little bit notchy going into 2nd until warm, but sweet as a nut after that.

BUT, as for

enjoying a large portion of AAZ power through all four wheels!

sadly it's currently 2 wheels. VC's next on the list then! (but then I'm truly ready to go)

Seems a good time to do a couple of public thank yous for making my passage into the 4WD world less expensive than it might have been otherwise:

2wd or 4wd.....gear changes can often be a voyage of discovery into the unknown - makes any trip soooo much more entertaining......
