heres one more problem for me now
my engine is running rich (see refurb/replacement carb post)

and now when i try to start it when it is warm the starter motor seems sluggish and it wont start for about five mins till it has cooled down a little

do i need anew starter motor now too

i dont know what i would do without this forum

Its possible its suffered if you've been cranking a lot... or the field windings are weak or insulation breaking down.

Can you borrow a known good one to check? Or take yours off and have it checked over. Presume your battery is holding good charge and the heavy leads to starter and engine and gearbox earths are all good condition.

But starter motor is likely candidate, esp. if when it gets very hot. Another possibility is the starter motor bush in the bellhousing, if thats very worn then same symptons, feels like battery is knackered.

Always amuses me when some garage says "There's no such thing as a lazy starter mate". Unfortunately there is and some do indeed get affected by temperature too.

Swap with a known good one.

The aforementioned bush is V. Important!

I made the mistake of buying good S/H starters and not buying a new replacement bush. Its pretty much a waste of time and money. If the bush is worn then the 'new' starter will bind when hot and potentially 'burn out' quickly. All recon/new starters (as far as I have seen) come with the bush included.

Dont neglect it but beware it can be a pain to replace without the correct kit. If you get stuck with this give me a shout...

just try changing the starter bush first, its only a few pennies

is it easy to change the sarter bush im not too hot on mechanics does it tell you how to do it in the haynes manual?

1) disconnect battery negative
2) jack up, sit on axle stand and remove offside rear wheel
3) remove wires from starter
4) undo two bolts holding starter to bellhousing
5) withdraw starter
6) hoick out bush, if you look into the hole the starter came out of you will see it. I got mine out by expanding a rawl bolt in it and pulling, I think using a tap as described in the link would work better
7) drive new bush in as described in link (should be soaked in engine oil overnight prior to fitting
refit is reverse of above
