Heater Control Panel - Which One ?????

Hi All,
I have an 89 2.1 Injection transporter conversion - on the heater panel I have only 2 sliders BUT in the manual it suggests I should have 4 - confused
I am !!!!
The 2 slider controls that are on have different shaped head and they seem to extend when you pull them but seem to work ok when slid from left to right - I expected the head to pop off to let me get the panel off but the are just extend - Anyone got any ideas what thats all about.
Is it a different set of sliders that has been fitted from a later/earlier model or something - if anyone can give me a pointer it would be great - I'm stumped..
