clutch conundrums

Hi there :D ,

We posted a short while ago about a problem with our clutch being noisy when trying to select 1st or reverse. We tried a new release bearing but it is still the same. Basically if you put your foot on the clutch and rev you can hear a scraping noise as if the bearing is slipping on the pressure plate. Now me n kev have our mechanical heads together and believe that the master or slave cylinder may be defunct as we figure its not enough pressure. 1. does anybody agree our logic and 2. we cannot decide which cylinder to replace as there no signs of leaks, my thinking is that it could be the master cylinder as it could return fluid to the reservoir therefore reducing pedal pressure. :?: :?: :?: :?:

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated as we would like to bring the troublesome slapper to volksfest.

Cheers

Try holding the clutch pedal down for about 60 seconds and see if its any worse. Can you obtain second, third, fourth, etc. without any problems?
If its no worse after holding tour foot on the pedal then its unlikely to be slave or master cylinder. Could be air in the line but I take it you've bled the clutch already?
Do you get the noise when trying to engage 1st and reverse or when its actually in gear?

Hiya

We get the noise when no gear is selected and your foot is fullly down on the clutch pedal.

It is then difficult & noisy to select a gear. (embarrassing at islands and junctions)

We've bled til the cow come home, completely fresh liuquid in there now.

You can push the plunger on the slave cylinder back really easily and the pedal was high after bleeding but after a view clutch pedal depressions it has dropped to half way again.

ta for replyng

Suppose you didnt take the clutch off while you were in there?

Sounds like the friction plate is touching the crank bolts when clutch pressed...

Seen this on a couple of engines..

No cos we'd changed it about six months ago and the problem only surfaced about two months ago.

The noise is like when you almost select a gear but not quite!

that is what I was going to say, mine did the scraping thing and the crank bolts all have a very neat little bit missing. where the clutch had worn away so much, although I would have expected this to be noticed if you had a new release bearing put in... did you do the release bearing yourself?

Doesnt mean it hasnt started to eat the bolts... think you should check....

Thats why I asked if you had the clutch plate off...

If you keep crunching the gears it will break the box.. then you are into a lot more hassle and cost...

could be the master or slave not applying enough pressure, but you would normally get a leak .. you can also adjust the pushrod on the master cyl, its a bit akward to do but has a few threads..

its making the noise without trying to engage a gear? yes?... then I still think its the friction plate touching the crank.... clutch out and check the plate is the right way round.. long centre stub should be away from the engine

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all your advice. we did the release bearing by ourself and the clutch and pressure plate were inspected before it was putback together.

We think we may have found out what it is. After talking to Mick at MPI Campers and some research on tinternet by a friend, it appears that the spigot bearing for the gearbox input shaft into the flywheel may have collapsed. Don't worry we wouldn't drive it crashing the gears, we value our gertie and have spent far too much on her to want to spend too much more!!!

soooo next week gearbox off and we'll see what happens. keep you all posted, its a new one on me!

In the rover tomorrow for vanfest boo hoo!!!

Cheers once again

Hi There,

Just to keep you updated in case anyone else has the same problem. It was the needle roller beaing that sits in the crankshaft and supports the gearbox input shaft. All that was left was the outer casing which had welded itself to its home!!! So poor kev spent many afternoons underneath trying to get it out, ended up grinding it out. It seems that the bearing stops the shaft and of course the clutch wobbling all over the place when disengaged and cos ours was missing it wobbled. No damaged to clutch or pressure plate so we are assumng that there may be a little chafidge in the gearbox. But we're not going there!!!!

Cheers everybody
