I have developed a very loud creaking noise from the rear hub area on the drivers side. The hub itself is NOT hot to touch....It changes to a squeek the faster I go...turning a right hand bend it disappears.......it is definately a creaking .....I have never heard a noise like it before on any vehicle I have
Anyone got any ideas or had similar ???

Sounds most likely the inner edge of the brake shoes touching the drum... maybe a lip there, but anyway, have you jacked it up and checked for wheel bearing play? They can rock a bit even when new bearings have been installed, and often axial play can exist (in/out) - check for that first, in fact anytime noise like thta best to identify source ASAP!

What was the outcome reverend? I have a similar noise.

Sorry forgot about this thread...........I went to see Steve at Gasure.....He put a very long peice of scaffolding pipe into said wheel, and tightened up the very loose nut, bearing was ok, and passed a very rigid MOT yesterday..........Oh, no more creaking noises.......Result

The rear hub nut should be 350ftlbs... thats a large bloke on the end of a 3ft scaffold pole.... and should have a split pin in it..

I think Steve fits that bill ..and new split pin fitted

Steve on a 3'pipe? me thinks that's well over 600 foot pounds torque



1 foot pound torque = 1 pound 1 foot from middle.

Just had a look at mine - finger tight!!!

Are there any theories as to why the hub nuts can come loose? We initially picked up the noise in the south of France during our summer holiday and spent a couple of days trying to sort it out (the ADAC breakdown cover definitely worth getting). It ended up with a garage removing, cleaning and refitting the hub which has lasted up until last night (c.1000 miles and 2 months). So do you think that the French garage didn't tighten the nut sufficiently or is there perhaps an underlying issue?

they probably come loose because ordinary peeps have no concept of how tight they should be in the first place. what most diy fitters think is tight will not be 350 ft/lb.
