be aware of clearance issue with aftermarket shadek oil pump for diesel, check rotational clearance of no. 3 before fitting sump, solution is clearancing or fitting original pick up I believe.

The aftermarket pick up pipes are completly useless and only fit for the bin.

Get it flat and fit original pick up. The bolts MUST only be used once.

The only time there is a clearance ishue is when u are using it on a 1.9 not on a 1.6.The 1.9 has counterweighted conrods wich interefeer with the one make of pump. This is easily solved by removing a small part of the pump.

You could use a surface plate with abrasive to get the pickup flat, if you can't get it machined... see Wiki

easy with ally, just keep vacuuming out the abrasive paper... and choose a suitable grade. (about 180 should be about right, don't be tempted to keep flatting when paper is blocked).

Thanks everyone,Harrymann the engine is in a machine shop so having extra parts done, pump, turbo, and exhaust manifold will be quite satisfying.

Bit of a hijack here, but I'm just about to put an SB back together and don't want to "cock" it up.

Re. the oil pump, I'm planning to make a hybrid of the SB 36mm pump body, and T3 pickup tube. I'll let y'all know how that comes out. I want the 36mm pump as the head is hydraulic vs. the solid lifter JX.

My big-ends have studs NOT bolts, torqued plus 1/4 turn. Bentley does not say replace. I am not planning to replace them.

Main caps look to be std. non-strech 10.9 bolts, torqued to 65Nm. Bentley does not say replace. I am not planning to replace them.

Crank pulley bolt will be replaced as per manuals.

Main shells look good except the no.1 which has some scuffing. Is it OK to replace just no. 1 or must they all the done together ?

I am planning to replace the intermediate shaft bearings.

What do you say Andy ?

Don't use an old pump, use a new one with old pickup.
The bentley manual is 15years+ out of date, vw now state replace big end bolts/studs. VW update things due to experience. I would not dream of re using any big end bolt or stud, its not worth the risk if it breaks its total destruction. Main bearing cap bolts are less important but again i would never re use. The main bearings should come in a full set so may as well put them all in. Good luck finding intermediate bearings in this country.

AsAndySays you won't find the int bearings, unless Simon Baxter sells you a set... (Oops  )

even then they'll need line-reaming, as they probably don't come to finish size.

But then if anyone can find them, you do seem to have a knack of getting all sorts of useful bits and bobs... so if you do track some down, make sure you order half a dozen sets for the rest of us :)

Don't get to worried about intermediate bearings, people worry way too much about them, unless they are really worn stick it together as is. If VW thought they would need replacement they would sell them. I have never seen any that worried me. New engines have play in the shaft straight out of the factory.
