Hello all,
slight problem with my gearbox in that it was a 5-speed but is now only 3. 4th and 5th gear will not select. Have tried all the usual checks i.e. linkage, selector mechanism but still no good so problem is definitely within the box.
As my knowledge of gearboxes is none this is where the help is needed. Struggling to find a good 5spd box within reasonable distance of home (York) and do not have a clue as to wether box can be reconditioned or as to who does this sort of thing or what sort of price I would be looking at. Also would fitting a 4spd box and linkage be a possibility.

Any help would be gratefully accepted/appreciated, the van is a 1984 1.9 petrol but not sure of any other details.

Aidan (Beaker) can rebuild the box I think... but sounds like you have driven it a fair bit since 4/5th went, not so go good maybe... anyway, PM him and ask (Beaker) - Warrington area.

Yes, a 4 speed should fit without changing the linkage, but you need to check the gear ratio, charts for codes are here...

Our's did the same on the way to the CZ Rep. Aidan's your man for recon. Otherwise it's chance a s/h one .... check the drain plug magnet before you hand over any money though ...just 'cos you can get the gears by hand on the selector doesn't mean the box isn't deceased.

Oh and better eat yer crusts 'cos these babies are HEAVY and we don't want any accidents no do we

I am feeling your pain......

My 1985 four speed also lost two gears, third and fourth in June. Luckily it happened within half a mile of home. Synchronutz in Shotts collected the van and sent the gearbox down to Aidan, who has done an excellent job with all new bearings, synchromesh rings, gaskets, seals, and most importantly a replacement third/forth gear synchrohub which had disintegrated, meaning third and fourth couln't be selected. Sorry to say but this sounds very similar to what has happened to your van.

The advice given to me was to fit a good gearbox once, rather than a bad one multiple times. If your gearbox was in sound condition before it broke it will mostly be worth rebuilding, rather than fitting another, unknown condition second-hand gearbox. It is probably more expensive initially but at least you will have confidence in the long term!

Its worth noting..
If you have a gearbox issue, DONT keep driving it.. a box that has just failed is mor likely to be rebiuldable.. if you have an issue with it and keep driving it, the problem wont go away..

As said.. a second hand box is a lottery... prices are rising and you dont know what you are getting..

I have seen some of the stuff Aidan has taken out of broke boxes and it isnt pretty.. they usually end up eating several parts and destroying what was a perfectly salvagable box.. Not to mention some of the ham "interfered with" so called "rebiults" (unknown rebiulders I should add) that have passed his way...

Good advice..... Fit a good box once... not a bad/indiferent box several times...
