Right ive got my leasure bat, and an inverter, running of the inverter is mainly my fridge, 240v cheap one out ot macro. When i run my leasure bat flat, i have to unplug the fridge find an extension lead and plug into mains/hookup. What im wondering is... could i plug a normal battury charger from halfords into the hookup, and conect it to my leasure, and put it on charge, there for the fridge would technicly be running from the battury via the inverter that is symutainously being charged from 240, i know im effectivly changing 240v into 12v then changing it back to 240v but im trying to do this stuff on a budget. http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... tId_171361

How much current does your 'fridge' take?

I cant see a rating on the Halfords charger, but the clue 'suitable for cars up to 1200 cc' suggests a low output.

so why aren't you just plugging the fridge into the 240?

plugging the fridge into 240 is a pain in the a***, i have to climb round the back unplug from oneplace, then sort out an extension lead to plug into the mains. Currently I dont have hook up, just a cable that i have coming though the window! I'm planning on putting one of these http://shop.justkampers.com/product_inf ... s_id/10694 in to neaten the job up, but i want my fridge to always run ( except when i swithc it off manually). Hope im making sence

doesn't a fridge run a lesuire battery flat in about 3-4 hours, and if a lesuire battery is completely flat in my case it doesn't take any change through the split charger.

I am not even sure whether the split charger will be able to run the fridge at the same time as charging the lesuire battery up.

wouldn't it be easier to get your hook up sorted out properly and use ice blocks in the fridge whilst travelling..

or buy one of those 3in1 fridges I understand they run for ages on gas.

The fridge will run for approx 6 hours befor the leasure is flat, and i think that is ok for me, I dont have a split relay, I simply have a battury isolate switch btween the starter and leasure battury, when driving they are connected, when camping they are disconected, you get more charge though the big switch than a relay.

Rubbish. A decent relay is a big switch, and stop you forgetting to switch over.

You still havent answered the question how much current does your fridge take?

If your fridge takes more than 6A You will need a bl**dy big charger to supply it. Most battery chargers wont do.

maybe ive just had crappy relays in the past, not sure, at work at the mo, when i get home ill cheak the current the fridge needs, and get back, cheers, jack

Incidently how much current does the stock alternator give at idle?

Stock alternator is a 65A model, I think.

On an other note this is nice i am sitting in the back of my van wirelessly connected to the house having a fag after giveing my van a dame good clean!

That tells me that with a 100% efficient inverter then at 12v your going to be drawing 10A.

You aint never going to be running 100% efficient - more like 80% - so lets say 12A.

A battery charger that supplies in excess of 12A will be massive!

Im all for doing things on a budget - but this sounds bonkers....

Is there any way I could have my fridge plugged in so when the van is running it runs off the inverter, but as soon as i plug into mains it automaticaly switch over? I guess thats where zig units ect come in, but I got a full on shoe string
