running woes!!

just taken me a hell of a long time to get me Aircooled devon camper roadworthy again, some new panels, some paint, new interior, but could only stretch to a secondhand engine, had an MOT the other week, went straight through

) emissions etc all good, went and got some tax and like ten year olds we packed the van up for a night away!! had a wicked time & havent slept that good for ages!!! but it just didnt seem to drive as good as the old engine, chugged around as if on choke all the time (although its not), cant twiddle too much with the carbs as i dont really know what i'm doing, the timing is ok, i,ve put new leccy fuel pump on with new filter and pipes and new vacuum elbows,took a compression test today 1 -129psi, 2 -119psi, 3 -115psi, 4 -125psi,( does this seem ok?) does anyone have any ideas on what i should do or check next to sort the running out, as we are going to venture out of the county in a couple of weeks and i'm not really looking forward to the drive!

Compression is a little spaced apart, could be a little closer but that shouldnt cause you too many problems. My guess is probably a dirty carb, espicially as its a second-hand engine. Did the carb come with the engine? If so that could be the problem. You may even have some water or dirt in the float chamber which wouldnt be helping matters much. Best to have a little looksie. Carbs aren't as scary as you think... Just make sure everything goes back how you found it. Counting how many turns each jet is done into the carb is necessary though so you can get them back in the same place!

yeah carbs did come with the engine, but i've cleaned the float chambers out, and one has a top off of my old carb as the little brass inlet pipe was missing, replaced the choke flaps too, ( turned the chokes round aswell, to make sure they are off. have done it to all my aircoolds, have had probs with auto chokes before.) worth me getting a carb rebuild kit, or should i keep the cash in the bank for some replacements??
