swapping old style fuel guage for new

Hi Just had my fuel guage pack up its on a 82 Aircooled have managed to get the later style fuel guage from a golf mk2 pod will this be accurate in the van? anyone done this or does anyone have a spare fuel guage they want to sell. I have a good temp guage from the gti pod if anyone wants it.
