Have taken the rocker cover off my 1.9dg. Haynes manual says to set the basic inital setting when the rocker cover has been removed, but a mechanic has advised me against it. What is the bes tthing to do?

For routine maintanance leave well alone. Only needs to be done on engine rebuild. Its not a maintanance item, the hydraulics do it for you, (most of the time)

thanks for the quick reply. Will do as you advise. Odd how haynes says to reset whenever the rocker cover has been removed

I am just trying to find my copy of the Haynes manual to see what they mean. I have never adjusted any before.

Cant find that haynes manual, Bentley only mentions it on rebuilding the engine or having replaced a hydraulic lifter.

My 2ltr cu Aircooled haynes said on chapter 1 section 28. Title hydraulic tappets initial setting. An initial basic setting for the hydraulic tappets must be carried out whenever the rocker shaft assembly has been removed or tappet renewed.Could this be a mistake for rocker cover?.

The initial setting is usually... Turn adjusters in until they are just touching the top of the valve stem and then one and a half turns further in. Make sure you are at TDC (Top Dead Centre) for each cylinder you are adjusting though.

Rocker cover doesnt affect the clearances on the wbx engine..

The correct setting for the hydraulic tappets is 1/4 to 1/2 turn preload ONLY.... VW got this wrong and stated 2 turns... revised much later.. Haynes just copied the VW setting..
