Gas fridge - carbon monoxide fumes?

Hello all
The guy who sold me my T25 1983 a/c Devon said to me that you should have a window open at night due to the carbon monoxide emissions from the fridge (when running on gas obviously). Surely the vent to the outside of the van channels them outside?
Thought please. Ta.

That`s what it`s for. Check that the vent pipe is still connected up
It`s more to do with the fridge gas burning the oxygen in the air as combustion occurs, I always have the roof vent open and the front windows down a fraction for ventilation anyway, or you will get condensation forming.

Mate... I bought a carbon monoxide detector for mine as I use the gas fridge all the time. I know it works as when I'm cooking it starts to rise when I have the grill on (the rings don't affect it), but this is not enough for the alarm to go off. It doesn't move above 0ppm when just the fridge is running... you'd get more response smoking a fag next to it!
My advise would be to get one.. they're only a few quid for real peace of mind, especially if you've got kids. Got mine on ebay..£14 delivered!

Also check your gas connections to the fridge and make sure that there are no leaks.

There is a danger.
The haemoglobin in your blood will take up carbon monoxide in preference to oxygen if there is any blockage in your vents. I have a coolbox style 3-way fridge which I only use in the awning if I'm using gas.
Warning signs of carbon monoxide include headaches, visual disturbances, slurred speech and apparent 'drunken' behaviour, also a redder than usual complexion in the early stages.
Later signs include unconsciousness, blueish colouration as asphyxia develops.
If you suspect you may be affected do not attempt to drive, get to hospital via other means, if necessary by ambulance. Even if you seem to recover fully, long-term brain damage can result.

Thanks for informative replies - particularly the physiology lesson. Excellent! Being in the health profession I enjoyed that one!

I know it's a bit late to reply. However when me and my girlfriend first got our van, we had some very cosy nights sleeping with the gas fridge on. We thought how beautifully we were sleeping and put the sore throats and lethergy down to the work we were doing at the time... it was the fridge even though the windows were open etc, etc. It was quite worrying. So we just turn off the gas all together when we go to sleep. They are still cosy but of a more natural type.
Hope your still all right because some times it is better to be safe than sorry as I feel we were!
