It's dead common for them to be rusted to heck - it's also quite common for 'helpful' souls to completely fill them, which makes attaching an awning a whole load more difficult. They're basically quite poorley designed - work beautifully on a daily driver, but as soon as they're kinked at all, or a van spends time 'resting' in the elements, the water just sits there.
A lovely looking van elsewise can be annoyingly ruined by rotten gutters and rot round the filler cap (2WD)........oh yeah, and the other stupid design fault - where the bumper and van body meet at the front - that seam also suffers greatly by being left standing in damp conditions (ie Britain)
