the engine has been running really roughly.. so i cleaned all the plugs (they were all very black and sooty) i cleaned the dizzy etc.. and made sure all the leads were back in the correct order.
then i tried to start it again, and after much spluttering it started but only with much encouragement from the gas pedal.. as soon as i took my foot off the gas pedal it died again.
i then took the air filter off and was shocked to find oil flowing from the direction of the carb.. what have i done ?
can anyone help diagnose the problem please?

The oil residue will just be from the crankcase breather pipe that recycles the gases rather than vent to air. Give the pipes a good clean, but I shouldn't think there is anything to worry about there and probably got nothing to do with your starting and running problems.

hi, its not just residue, the oil was flowing out of the pipe.

the breather tower could be blocked slightly, take that it off and clean it , (its the tall round thing next to the alternator) only hold on with 4 small 10mm bolts (i think they 10 could but 8 ) ,also check the pipe that comes off that to the carb top , make sure its not kinked

Have you recently changed the oil? could be it's slightly overfilled and is blowing too much through the crankcase breather. The rough running sounds exactly like a prob I just remedied on my 1.9 DG. The carb was a 'special' from half a VW and a vauxhall and the choke was sticking on , fouling the plugs and running way too rich. Sounds like you need to look at your carb methinks.

I've had similar problems recently but mine started following an oil change. You might get some useful tips from here:

What's the best way of cleaning the breather tower out to make sure it's not blocked? Took ours off tonight and it was caked inside with hard, black stuff that I scraped out as well as I could with a screwdriver. Not sure how clear the top end is though. Can it be soaked in anything to get all the gunk out?
Is it ok to put 15mm copper pipe inside the breather hose and then bend it with a pipe bending spring (used by plumbers etc), to stop the hose kinking? When I took ours off there were two lengths of hard plastic tubing inside the hose, but both of these were kinked. At the Nottingham techy wknd DiscoDave mentioned putting something inside this hose but I can't remember what it was that he recommended.
Thanks for any info.

Tony , soak it in hot soapy water (over night) and it should come apart , the inner should slide out and then it just a matter of cleaning it up and drying it off and refitting it

This worked a treat, although I had to prise the inner cylinder out using a bradawl to get it moving. Once it was out though there was loads more cr*p in there that needed cleaning out. Biological washing powder, lots of hot water, a bottle brush and a sponge scourer seemed to do the trick.
Managed to reinforce the breather hose using 15mm copper pipe and a bending spring to get it to the right shape. Also used silicone lubricant to help get the rubber hose along the copper pipe.
Seems to be working ok so far!
E D I T: Need to be careful when taking the breather housing off in the first place though, it's easy to lose the washers that are under the nuts, and there's an O ring at the base of the housing.

likewise I spent about £8 on brake cleaner and degreaser to clean mine up
