Check all Ground (Earth) connections,,,,,,,as the one from the battery to the battery box has been known to corrode away completely,,,,,,,

try th e one from the gear box to the chassis too, this was the problem we had.......

The starter motor is fitted with what looks like another smaller cylinder sitting piggy-back style. The smaller one is the solenoid and the larger one ...wait for it...is the starter. The small wire connected to the solenoid has a habit of ending up corroded/sh=itty/or loose, clean off this wire and make sure it is nice and tight/clean when you refit it. If you want to make sure it's the solenoid, get your pal to tap it with a small hammer as you hold the key over.

This is a common fault so try this remedy first before you splash out on another starter motor.

dont forget the starter motor bush too, buy a few leave to soak over night in oil.

You problem may be electrical rather than mechanical or a combination of the two.

I would go in this order
1.clean connections and test for voltage drop (cover them in vaseline when done)
2. change bush
3. change solenoid.
4. change motor
5. change van (only kidding!)

also dont forget live feen from battery to starter . i have had this problem twice now - suddenly wont start or dosnt start on but on 4 /5 th attempt suddenly fires up. check ring terminal on live feed/starter isnt broken off/corroded (when you smack it starter it moves psition of wire to make contact) the securing nut hasnt come loose - just a few turns has caused problems before)
might not just be an earthing problem
