GTi Rev counter

Finally got round to fitting a rev counter, I had a faulty temperature gauge on my GTi conversion and decided to fit an aftermarket one, this meant I could lose the original. The rev counter is out of the mk2 Golf donor car.

that looks realy nice did you just remove the rev counter from the gti and fit it to the 25 pod or is it more complex been looking for a rev counter for a while looks like a factory fit job

cheers perro,
it looks factory, unlike the temperature gauge which is temporarily mounted in a pod.
Fitting is a conversion and isn't easily reversible, you need the tacho and the plastic housing it fits in out of a mk2 Golf. Then you dremel both the T25 dashpod and the Golf bits until they marry, the mounting holes don't all coincide so I araldited plastic in the right place for the self tapping screws to go into. Tip - cut a section with a threaded hole in already in it off of the donor dashpod.
You leave the flexible circuit intact but have to cut a couple of slits in it so it stretches round the back of the tacho.
You have to cut out the part of the original dashpod that makes up the inside of the flexible circuit connector block, fit it and leave it free foating, all it does is keep the connecting points in shape.
I'll try and get a photo of it next time I'm working on it if anyone is interested.

wiring it up, never thought of that
I spent ages decoding the haynes manual for the GTi dash then just as i'd sussed it I found the easy solution...
if you look at the original connector block that fits onto the tacho and flip over the flexible printed circuit there are all the symbols telling what each of the 4 pins do.
Fuel gauge is in the rev counter BUT temp gauge is not.
Good luck

got me mk 2 rev counter going to do it this weekend wish me luck got mr dremmel and a stiff gin to pluck up the courage to destroy a perfectly good T25 dash pod but that is one cool conversion so its worth the risk and hey im sure it will be fun.
Any tips other than posted Sir Chad would be great will let you know how I get on thanks for the info so far

you can see the connector block with the corresponding part of the original dash pod (black) resting on top of the new section (white).
I taped up the obsolete feeds to the temperature gauge with insulation tape.
There are 4 terminals on the rev counter, looking at the back of it, the 1st one (on the left) is earth, the 2nd is not used, the 3rd is positive feed and the 4th is connected to the negative side of the coil. I soldered the wires directly onto the terminals with enough slack that I can remove the whole lot and sit it to one side if need be.
you also need to use a small screw and nut to bolt the voltage stabiliser onto the flexi circuit as you'll lose the original fastening when you junk the original fitment.
Have fun

thanks for the extra info will be going in this weekend if I get stuck will give you a shout thanks for the number.
Just fitted me telly dvd freeview and my reversing sensors Im a bit of a tech head with things electrical redone most of the wiring up front I think e bay is my biggest downfall as I just keep getting stuff off it got the central locking and electric windows and mirrors to do after this followed by the rear view camera as Im getting rid of the back window space and putting cupboards in there .
Wish me luck destroying a perfectly good dashpod

finaly fitted it took a slightly differant route to you I removed the rev counter and the white backing plate and cut then to fit the t25 pod then drilled a large hole in the origional black mounting plate and fitted this over the top . This allowed the use of the cable clip to the circuit board and the mount for the voltage regulator.
My van is water cooled do you want the temp guage that came with the pod no charge least I can do for the help. Will wire it in in the morning hope it works have taken some pics for comparison will post when I work out how to do it.
have been looking at the gti circuit board for the time clock function do you have a wiring diagram so i\ can work out which connections power the clock function
sorry to be a pest

well done, I forgot to put the "what you do to your van is not my fault" clause on the end of my original post so glad I'm not getting any bad comeback. I'm happy with the temp gauge I've got, I trust the calibration on the aftermarket one more for my GTi lump. Out of interest what are you doing for a water temp gauge? I've only got the haynes manual for the golf, can scan it on Wednesday if you want, though IMO would probably be easier to get a clock IC from RS or Maplin (or are you trying to get the trip computer working?)
Post your pics, it's always good to give something back to the forum.

Ive got a water cooled so water temp not a problem unless my tea is cold .Im trying to get the trip and computer functions working got most of the sensors so shouldnt be to much of a problem . have sent the gti speedo for calibration as this is a key part of the system . if you could scan the diagram for the relivant bits i.e the instrument pod and the computer bits that would be great . Might be floggin a dead horse but its fun trying.
Once again thanks for your help it has been much apprechiated if your going to vanfest would like to buy you a beer
regards

..forgot to mention, whilst it was all in bits I fitted blue LEDs into the orginal bulb holders and wired them in series with a resistor, putting silver foil on the white reflector tabs makes a huge difference too. This isn't normally necessary but I had to do something cos my dash lighting was atrocious.
I'll hold you to that beer, probably not going to vanfest but catch you another time.
