running home today and i started to get a knocking noise from underneath, obviously panic ensued! it was making a noise when the clutch was let out so i guessed gearbox.

limped home by which time the noise had stopped and got the back end up. i span the wheel either side and they span fine no horrible noises. i then ran it with the engine and found that the n/s wheel ran round fine with no drama, increased revs and sped up perfectly.

the o/s wheel was different. it didnt spin just on tick over like the other side, started to move when revs increased but was a bit 'jerky' but no noise.

i tried a little experiment, i put my toe onto the bottom of the tyre when it was on tickover. the n/s wheel nearly put me on my a*** and it made no difference but the o/s wheel stopped dead and i was even able to rotate it the other way!

so i'm thinking driveshaft in some way is toast but what is at fault? is the the cv joint or is it the box itself? or is it something else.

i dont want to replace the box if all i need to do is replace the cv joint or something else.

The fact that one wheel is 'refusing'to stop or slow when you put your foot against it tends to suggest that the differential is jammed. The fact that the other wheel is barely being driven suggest that it is no longer properly connected through the diff.

Sounds to me as if something in the diff has broken causing one side to jam solid.

Try with the engine off but in gear. Can you turn each wheel by hand and how does it feel? If all is well you should find that turning one wheel causes the other to rotate in the opposite direction. They should turn quite freely.

If my presumption above is correct, one wheel won't turn at all and the other will turn fairly freely with no interaction between them.

I hope that I am wrong since this could get expensive.

yep tried that, and both wheel rotated in opposite directions when turning one then the other so that seems to be fine so i'm guessing(hoping) the diff is fine.
