Automatic transmission fluid

I need to top up my transmission fluid on my van - 1900cc Automatic transmission 1990 Transporter model. I do not have the original manual, and Haynes just says Dextron ATF. However, I asked my local garage if they had any (as Halfords were useless and said they did not carry the correct fluid - according to their charts, which listed it as Transmax) and my mechanic asked me the colour of the fluid...he was expecting me to say red (as for Dextron2) but the fluid is about the colour of clean engine oil, therefore making it likely not to be the Dexrton 2. I have now been to another motor factors and they have NO listing at all for the correct fluid for my make and model, and one vague reference to check the owners handbook...which I don't have! HELP PLEASE!!!!
Dazed and confused!

Only use Dexron or Dexron II...it's available from GSF or Eurocarparts or any decent motor factors.
And just in case you're not totally sure of the correct method of checking and filling here's the info directly out of the Bentley manual.
ATF Level checking.
* ATF at operating temperature of 60 degrees(attained after driving approx 6 miles after a cold start)
* vehicle on a level surface.
*parking brake engaged.
* selector lever at "P"
* engine idling.
* use a lint free cloth to wipe dipstick.
* replace dipstick,then remove and check the level which should be inbetween the Max & Min marks.
* Top up accordingly...DO NOT OVERFILL!

I did use that method to check the level (thanks for explaining it so clearly)a nd it is just below the min mark, the confusion has arisen due to the fact that what is on the dipstick does not resemble Dextron 2 which my mechanic thought it would have in it, and what I really don't want to do is put the wrong stuff in.
