Not one of VW's finest ...

Bit of a poor compromise. Poor to dangerous handling on road, slow, bouncy, unstable. In fact army handbooks suggest that for safety reasons it should be driven in 4WD at all times, even on the road.

Not great offroad either. It does have difflocks and a G-gear, but no low transfer box. It does run out of puff pretty soon and has to be thrashed all the time to get any sort of performance ....so it breaks fairly easily.

Had the "pleasure" of driving one a few times on an army excercise ground (ferrying the Major around) ...neither him nor me particularly enjoyed the experience.

The German army didn't extend the initial contract and switched to the rather more competent and versatile MB G-Wagon "Wolf" as soon as they could.
