For the last couple of years now we have made a day out of attending the Cumbria Steam Gathering (28-29 July) at Cark Airfield Flookburgh, South Lakes and this year I thought we would be better camping as close to the Cark airfield as it would be possible so we could walk to the site each day.

Some of you may remember the name 'Flookburgh' as it was a well know minature Mallory Park styled race circuit with the addition of heaps of sheep shyte and various ridges pot holes and surface changes to keep the most determined Yamaha LC rider entertained.

Anyway, to my point. I decided to scan the local area for a suitable camp site and came across the delightful 'Haven Holidays' site almost next door to the very same place I was wanting to visit,,,,,,,,,I thought great drive up there Friday and spend the next 2 days wandering around the Steam Gathering,,,,,,,,,,BUT the more I asked the question the more it became aparent as to why we only ever went to this show on one of the 2 days.

It turns out the organisers don't do a weekend family ticket (OK the kids go Free, But you know what I mean ) and then the shock of all shocks was the price quoted by Haven for our 2 night stay for 2 adults,2 kids under 14 and our youngest was free , this came to only 118 GBP,

I added up the 'Optional Extras' and this brought the price to something like 156GBP for a 2 night stay at the south lakes site,,,,,,,,,,,,FFS , is it me or is this reasonable for a pitch to camp on ?

Now I'm a simple working class lad, with a family and these places are supposed to cater for the likes of me and my kind,,,,,,,,,,am I out of touch with todays prices OR am I missing the point ?????

Hi Fritz. Haven are the Ritz of the camper /caravanning world (load of crap for load of money). They are overpriced and taking over all the better sites . I used to pay about £150 for a week in a static caravan (sorry for swearing), now the same week in the year costs £600+. This is a difference of about 9 or 10 years. Wages have not increased by that much!! As I have suggested before, why can't a big organisation get together with a bit of money (and a bit of clout and organisation) and buy a field, install a tap and chemical disposal system, and charge a reasonable fee for the tap and toilet brigade, that's the way to camp! Club 80-90, how about it! Let's get it together!

Just a quick tip everyone (I'm sure a lot of people on here know already). To avoid being ripped off by campsites, try www.ukcampsites.co.uk and have a look around there.

The Camping and Caravanning Club Lakeland Section have a four day meeting 26th to 30th July at Templelands Farm Allithwaite, which is about a mile along the road from Flookburgh. £5 per night per unit! But it's for club members only. You can always turn up and join the club and then stay for the weekend. A hell of a lot cheaper than the Camp Site. If you want the phone number of the people running the weekend let me know.

Fritz - that's a scandalous wedge of dosh for a couple of nights.
Nick's suggested site is only a hundred yards from our house and although I'd love to let you park up for nothing we don't have any offroad parking. But there are other sites not that far away such as:

still not cheap but as daft as that other one.

Aren't Haven one of those companies that run caravan holiday parks, full of statics and maybe a few touring pitches? A completley different kettle of fish to a campsite IMO. Would never consider staying anywhere like that. About as much "ambience" as a hotel and prices to match! A tap in a field? Now that's more like it!

Just priced up a week on a Haven site in Weymouth . . . .
Seven nights, standard pitch wiv EHU , My 8 year old son and me . . . . .£490.00 . . . . .@*#koff

Our favourite campsite in Brittany has a heated outdoor pool.
Lovely individual landscaped pitches surrounded by trees and hedges, eletric hookup and individual water tap, free hot showers.

£147 Euros per week in high season for 4 people.

fritz, do they not have camping on the show site anymore? Used to go every year with parents in caravan, had a belting time

That is taking the P!! My wife priced up Marton Mere at Blackpool...3 nights for van & awning (with leccy) for £45!! This was yesterday for this week....just back a week ago from one of their sites - 4 nights for £38. These are at sites that have clocked onto the fact that the Scottish schools break earlier so bump prices up at end of June

I know the further south you get the dearer it gets but that is scary
