hi its not the kit in the address u gave. u alter the gearstick itself by moving a metal ring up or down the gearstick and reweld it on. cant remember which way it goes so trying to find origonal link. hope this makes sense

Never heard of a homemade conversion. Kit moves the fulcrum up the gearstick to decrease top movement and increase bottom movement. If you move the fulcrum point, U need to add a spacer so bottom of gearstick is in right place to work linkage.
I'm trying to find a cheap gearstick extension.. like 4-5" to screw onto stick and put knob back on it.. with a bend in it or offset kinda like this "~" to use with my shift kit.

boilerman,
Very interested in knowing how to do it without kit. 25quid for kit has held me back. Old bug/bus kits were cheap and I used them on everything.
Thanks,
Lloyd

The cut and shut was a long time go.. and can be done if you have the parts, time and tools to do it... not everyone has..
The short shifter kit bolts right in, it works and takes no time to install..
The shifters used on beetles and Bays etc are totally different..

What parts and tools are needed? Just curious.
Kit is simple but real quick if you have rear heater vent between seats as it has to be removed before kit can be installed. Is why I haven't put kit in.
Beetle/Bay/Split are same design, different kit. Bricks has bigger shifter shaft so need a different kit. Both use a spacer and move fulcrum point/ball up the shifter shaft.

I bought a Brickwerx one n guess what - it worx!
Took less than an hour to fit too.
I always work it out on a hourly rate before I spend hours making summat - kit won for me! Betcha there are loads more jobs u'd rather spend half a day doing to or with ya van...

I'll probably install the brickie one someday. As far as I know it will not work on the turbo diesel models. Can the 'cut and shut' work on the turbo diesels?
