What's a 1Y?

Preparing to get a T25. Thinking ahead. Couldn't find answer in thread at top.

Its a type of engine. A 1Y is a 1.9 diesel.
They didnt come standard - the only diesels out the factory were the 1.6td and the 1.7d.
My 1Y came out of a seat ibiza and was more or less a straight swap for my 1.7d.

or a painfully under powered and slow 1.6 d
a 1y is a normaly asperated diesel(no turbo)

Same crank as an AAZ, but the rods and pistons are a bit lighter, and unless the block has 1.9D/1.9TD as opposed to 1.9D cast into it on the exhaust side, won't have the oil spray jets - so not a good idea turboing it.
The VW industrial engine equivalent is the ADE, whilst the ADG is equiv to the AAZ
Full engine number is stamped onto a flat boss level with but just forward of the vacuum pump, pretty well above the block's crankcase breather port - they're often very difficult to read!

Well, there's plenty of info around on this forum about Subarus...
IMO 1Y is a viable T25 engine, certainly on an economy basis, just don't expect too much up hills or if towing.
Not a match in any way for a Subaru 2.2, you'd need a quite hot 1.9 TD or Tdi for that. Look at the rjes website if you haven't already

Harryman - your a legend - i didnt understand much of that engine techy stuff - but when i need to i know the man that does!
wrt whether the 1Y is a suitable power plant for the T25:
It is.
However, If you want subaru power - go for a subaru!
There's different trains of thought on this one - having had a scooby turbo and loved it, i sold it in favour of a land rover. The missus got banned and my points were racking up - so now i favour a very chilled out approach of getting to places....
In my opinion, if you want a fast car, get a fast car. However, if you want to make a T25 fast - and you achieve it, then i admire you and you have more money than sense (and love VW's).
The other train of thought is that diesels are soooo slow - you're better off going for a 2.1 petrol with some omph. I suppose this is where the subaru lump fits in.
Slow is good for me. The reliability is even better.....

subaru is cool for not havent to change down for all but steep hills yes does drink fuel abit but sounds sweet (well does with straight through back boxes !! )
but even with 130 ish bhp with out messing with it i still sit at about 65 !

So
1Y = powerful enough, reliable, but prob not good enough to tow with
Subaru = loads of oomph!, good to tow, drinks diesel a bit, expensive to get installed
1.9TDi, say from a Sharan = somewhere inbetween the above.
Two last things, 1 - do any of these conversions give better economy?
2 - is a diesel more economical than a gassed petrol?
I'll carry on reading and shut up now

Subaru not diesel drinker, petrol user, can give 25 mpg driven sensibly
Equally a 1.9TD might not give a lot more, all depends on state of tune and how driven, but could give 30 mpg

so where do i look to get a 1Y engine?
what cars have them in?
and can a "normal" mechanic (who deals with classics usually) do this easily or do i need a T25 specialist?

Iy is in a lot of cars including Seat, Golf ect. look at Ringos wiki thread, I got mine from a 94 Golf.

Hey guys. I've just bought a T25 Crewcab with a 1.7D in it atm. Just got a few more engine related questions. Which 1.9 comes most recommended, a 1Y or an AAZ? Obviously one has turbo and one not, so what's the difference in general MPG, driveability etc? Also do they both fit straight in, or is much fettling required? If i change the engine then I wouldn't really be doing it for much of a power boost, just that the current lump has done 185k, so not sure how much longer it will plug on. May just change for peace of mind if I can do it relatively cheaply. Thanks.

Dont bother putting a diesel in yer van dudes if you are planning on comin to london next year,its gonna cost ya emission charge.£200 per day!
Put a Subaru in instead-petrols cheaper!
