Probably an age old discussion and had a look through past threads, but when people say a "good" oil, how do you determine what is a "good" one? I have been told to get a 10w/40 semi synthetic for my 2.1i SS engine, sound about right? Also I don't know what oil is in the engine already, OK to top up with the oil mentioned?

I answered this question 3 days ago for Timmo. See page 2 of 'Technical'.

The 1.9l & 2.1l petrol engines use the same oil. Given the UK climate/temperatures - a good quality 15W/40 multigrade is what you want.

Quantum(Silver)Semi-Synthetic from VW...cheaper than GSF...well it is for me.

I read that cheers, though it didn't tell me how to determine what a "good" oil is i.e. how do you determine from Morris, Quantum or Asdas own which is a good one?

I am not sure why I have been recommended 10w/40 for my camper, though I would imagine I would have to drop my current oil in there and put new oil in so I know what it is to top up?

This is all inthe WIKI I should imagine....

15w40 or 15w50 or even 20w50 if its high mileage and tired/leaky...

any branded oils will be fine but cannot coment of "asda" etc own brand stuff ultr cheap stuff.... I have been using Castrol GTX 15w50 for the last 3 years as it was easily available and pretty cheap really.. and I do a lot of distance work at high rpm.. use a good quality oil filter and change it regular...

i wouldnt be putting synthetic or semi in a wbx, they dont like it too much, leaks appear where there wasnt any, it has been discussed aplenty in the past, stick to mineral oil if you can.......

Said it before but I suppose it's worth repeating ... Having talked at length with the old guy who runs the High Peak Borough Council garage (all their petrol vehicles run on lpg) He recommended using a good 15w/40 Diesel engine oil.

I use Shell Rimula Plus. This contains detergents which clean the engine BUT also it has additives which combat the breakdown of the oil which they've experienced with LPG and petrol engine oils towards the end of the service period, I change this at 3,000 to 4,000 miles or when the 4 poster's free and I remember, with the filter every other change.

Done this for 2 years now since conversion. BTW the guy at HPBC laughed his t!ts off when asked about semi-sympathetic oil

Yep your right GSF are "pooh", everything I wanted they didn't have.

Ended up with a litre of Fuchs 15w/40 semi syn to act as a top up.

With the upmost respect m8 this is doing my head in with yet another oil type to use

The dealer I bought the bus from says a good 10w/40 semi
Haynes says a good 15w/40
and everyone else says somik different!

I want to do the best by my 2.1i SS engine and just use a decent oil, should be simple.

Back to the drawing board

You use a good 15/40 you'll not go too far wrong, change it and it's filter regularly.
