VW Sharan suspected blown head gasket

A friend has just bought (bargain) Sharan 1.9TDI with suspected blown head gasket. This has a AFN engine code. He has ordered a workshop manual but we wonder if any members here have tackled the job and if there are any (or many) scarey bits to look out for.

Piece of pi$$ to do normally, but Sharans are harder work as the engine is a bit of a pig to get to.
Then theres all the special tools for setting the timing..
Then theres getting the head checked and skimmed....
