Problems with my 2.1 DJ this evening. Its minus 4 here at the moment and I had a little difficulty starting the Syncro. Took 3 shots to get going and was chugging at low revs in 4th gear. Didnt have that last year in these temperatures. Problem seems to be only in 4th and goes away when normal temp is reached. God diesels are so much easier !!!

Any clues??

Could it be the auxiliary air valve that sits on the engine, Mark? It sounds just like her.

Well the temperature is now up to 8 degrees and the problem persists and now wont tickover until warmup. Chugs in all the gears until warm. What and where is an auxiliary air valve and what does it do?

It's a cylindrical thing with a bulge at one end that sits on the engine - viewer's side of the inlet ducting, and connected into it with smaller tubes. Pop the tubes off and clean it out with carb cleaner is the normal recommendation. I would check it's electrical connections and also those of the T2 temp sender (in thermostat housing), and if no luck, move both sets of wires about when it's running rough, before it has warmed up... and see what happens, worked for me.

.. or ask Matt. This seems to be DJ-itis, but not vanagon syndrome itself.

Just been chatting with Andrew and of course
A. it won't now demonstrate the fault and
B. he filled up with cheap petrol from a place that's about to close
so it maybe just poor fuel or a bit of crud in the system....
I'm sure he'll let us know how it goes.
ISV seems to be fine as do all the other bits in the engine bay.

Trouble with this is I just dont use the vehicle enough so it will now sit for a few weeks before I get out in it again. So the €100 worth of 95 thats in it will just have to be burned off in the wifes car and the quad!!

Problem now appears to have gone. I ran the tank till almost empty and smoke started to belch out the back under load accompaniedwith a pinking sound. I put 50 liters of Shell Pura and a squirt on octane booster into the tank and went for a drive and everything seems to be ok. I'll know at the weekend when she gets used again.
