Hi this is for Steve. I have recently picked up a 2ltr Aircooled 1981 automatic gearbox devon conversion. The engine is a recon volkspares engine with new heads. The heads are proberly leaded and not unleaded .Due to the automatic gearbox being duff an unable to use the van.I will proberly attempt to convert it to manual if i can not get a autobox.I would like to have a lpg fuel conversion on the van but wondered if the leaded heads are okay to run on lpg.

What makes you think that these are leaded heads? the T25 (T3) was designed to run on unleaded from 1979 onwards, my 1980 has been running on LPG forthe last seven years at around 17k a year, what are you worried about? if you read the technical bits that peeps have kindly put pen to paper to share their knowledge on here and on the Brickyard you would have found that out long ago and to anyone else trying to run a T25 (T3) on leaded or a substitute - stop it they run on unleaded.

Steve I asked this question becouse i ran a type 2 1600cc Aircooled years ago .I had a replacement engine with new heads Volkspares did a diffrent spec engine that they say could be run on unleaded called a green engine in fact it was painted green .Not to be confused with there standard engine.Since then i have been running a T25 1600cc diesel then a T4 1.9 diesel .Both of these gave me good fuel consumption .I missed the T25 .I picked up a 1981 2ltr Aircooled devon with a replacement engine recently and am sorting out various problems with it.I have in mind to contact you soon with a view for a lpg conversion

with regards to the leaded/unleaded debate - VW engines were designed to run on unleaded from the early 70's. It was a bit of an aftersales marketing ploy to charge more for 'so called' uneleaded heads. The US was using unleaded since the late 60's, the UK was a bit slower of the mark, but VW's main market was the US for years so they engineered stuff towards them.

I wish I'd known about using unleaded fuel before - I've had my 1980 air-cooled for 2 years & have been religiously going to Sainsbury's for LRP and paying the premium! When I bought the van (my first VW) I was advised by a VW 'expert' that because of it's age, the van would have leaded heads!
