Yes, you just swap the bellhousings and the input shaft (to swap input shaft all you have to do is remove a circlip, then pull a splined sleeve off the shaft, then the input shaft screws off. Not sure that the ratios in a petrol box will be right for a 1.6na diesel though.... and swap the mountings from the front end of the box too
What you do have to watch is what type of gearbox's you are swapping, there are three different types of case, if you are swapping like case for like case it is possible:
091 early four speed
091/1 later four speed
094 five speed

thanks its a 1.6d but i have put a 1.9d engine in and the gearings to low now.
i rekon a petrol box would be better as my brothers old dg petrol used to fly down the motorway.
so i rekon a box off one of these might do the trick.
how do you know its the same casing? just by looking or do they have a number or code on them?
cheers

did you have to match the casings oldie?
or did you just go buy a petrol gearbox and put it on?

so would i be better with a 5 speed box?
what would i need to swop that i spose extra gear linkges and leavers and stuff? seems like a lot of messing about?
would have thought a petrol 4 speed will be as good?

check out ratios here
http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/VehicleSpec ... fo/gbx.htm
you can translate that into theoritical mph per rpm here
http://www.ukmotorsport.com/misc/gears.html
there's not a great deal of difference between four and five speed boxes, five speed will cost you much more and you will need the linkage too
I'm running a 1.9TD with a DU petrol box, it dropped the revs plenty compared with the box from the 1.6na that it replaced (can't remember what the code was but final drive was 5.86). I'm running slight oversize tyres too.
which end of kent are you? if you need a hand let me know, I'm probably not too far from you.

better off altering the ratio by putting some 16" or 17" ml alloys with 275 tyres on. they look good too
