VW new/reconditioned engines

Joe, I think that this question should really be in 'Technical'. :)

I know that new VW air cooled engines are no longer available & I think that the same may apply to water cooled. Alternatives ie:recon, range from the likes of Remtech @ £1,400 approx. or Vege, maybe slightly cheaper, both plus fitting at a garage of your choice.

A recon engine at a more reasonable cost is available from Elite VW in Essex at £800-£850 including free fitting providing you can get your van to them. Otherwise you would have to pay a carrier to transport the recon engine to your chosen garage & to send them your old engine. Then there would be the fitting costs. Hope that helps. :)

would be for a 1.9dg
If there are no 'new' engines, which recondition is regarded as best?

Laurie Pettit in Scotland, if he still does them, maybe Syncro-Nutz would rebuild one for you nicely, and quite a few have gone for the Elite deal... you might get a good second hand one too, if you look hard enough. Then there's the option of alternative engines, see Alt Engines Forum...

Think you'll find all bulk rebuilders have a reputation, one way or another... VEGE isn't a good one always, though depends who you ask.

VW engines are £1304 plus the vat for a 2.1 (DJ) engine they dont appear to list DG engines anymore. You need an exchanges lump to give them aswell. 1.9 ancilliaries will go onto a 2.1 though. I have a 1.9 runner here for £150

I bought a re-con vw 2.1 dj, and they delivered a brand new one, new flywheel, pump, heads, shiny new metal case, everything. I was well chuffed. I paid £1280.12 + vat and a £781.38 surcharge. Took 3 weeks to get the surcharge back as the exchange engine had to go to Milton Keynes to be inspected before VW would release the funds. Got a years warranty with it after a £40 inspection.
I am in for the long run with my van, so figured it would be worth spending the dosh. If you dont do many miles or will sell the van in the not to distant future I would possibly go for a cheaper option.
part number 025100031dx
I now get good discount on parts from VW as they all remember me, it caused a bit of a stir when the shiny new engine arrived, with lots of remenising from the older mechanics, and mild amusement from the T4 owning staff.
I have had other re-cons, and will stick with VW if I can.

I've been told you quite often get New back from VW these days on recons from that era, up to '95 stuff possibly...

Phoned vw earlier, they said that there are no reons for the 1.9dg, that there are 2.1djs, but no new engines, is there any way of guaranteeing one, or is it just pot luck?

Pot luck I imagine, they wouldn't advertise it I doubt

i've just had an elite one fitted to my van. they were almost a week late in delivering it so it made it difficult in terms of fitting it. Steve shaw fitted it for me, and a BIG THANKS is due to him for working late etc and squeezing it in, after loosing days with it not arriving on time etc.

Its all in and appears to be working fine though. Just done around 500 miles so its goign for its service/oil change next week.

I had a vw one £1500 + fitting. Fitting garage said the engine looked new.
No trouble since - previous recon one was rubbish!

Laurie Pettit in Scotland, if he still does them, maybe Syncro-Nutz

Both should be able to help you out.
Laurie was at Volksfling at the end of may. He was doing show and tell engine rebuilds all day long.
