Syncro T4 help needed in Teesdale near Durham

My dad (aged 75) is on holiday with my mum in their 1998 T4 lwb syncro. They have been touring the near north for a month now and the syncro has developed a nasty noise from underneath. I would normally sort these things out for him, but it's a hell of a trip from Devon up there. He has taken it to a local garage in Middleton-in-Teesdale who is a little clueless as to what the cause is. My dad has described the noise as coming from the front. (nice one dad!) and being relative to road noise. he thinks it is one of the two (yes two) prop shafts that take the power to the VC at the rear as there is a bearing carrier between the shafts which is bolted to the chassis sort of underneath where the bulkhead would be(level with the back of the front seats). The noise is described as a squealing which you would imagine a dose of WD-40 would sort.
Does anyone know of any syncro friendly garages in that area?
Like our T3 syncro's can he just have the prop removed?
Does the prop squeal when it is shot.
Any help would be very gratefuly received.
The syncro is a 2.5tdi 102bhp hightop camper towing a 1200kg caravan, with 90,000 miles and no breakdowns before this.

Cheers Phil, I have contacted the garage and the bloke there used to work for the military, and has kept service procedures for many military 4x4 including the T4 syncro. If the garage in Middleton cant sort dad out then SNC will have a go. they do prop shaft refurbs over 2 days, so might be very useful.

The center prop shaft bearing carrier is worn, replacement is 2 days waiting as only 3 in the country. Means dropping the engine sub-frame. Dads green flagging it back to Herts and Luton VW Van Center is gonna sort it. This sounds expensive. Dad always goes to VW. I am hoping he will see a nice new T5 and he will sell the T4 to me!! I expect VW will say that the two prop shafts need replacing at the same time. We will see.
