The starter on my 89 1.7 deisel has started playing up.It throws about a quarter turn then disengages. Its getting more and more frequent I've checked the connections and they're all sound. Does this sound liker a dodgy solenoid? Can it be replaced or do I go for a whole starter motor?

Yep solenoids are easy enough to do, 15-30 quid depending on who you get it from, do check that you have power to the solenoid all the time that the key is calling for it.
Yours is the umpteenth post about starters, must be the warm weather!!

Most auto electric places will get one (even in the depths of cornwall)try blag some screws incase you have to butcher your old ones off.
If your taking the loose starter motor in then they should be able to supply and fit a solenoid for 30ish.

last time in cornwall we fell out of the blue anchor after a session on the middle

beware that the solenoid might be throwing the pinion into the drive quite adequately but that the clutch mechanism on the drive might be worn out.
Replacing the solenoid if the clutch is shot would be a wasteful exercise. If you remove the starter and test it to see if the solenoid is doing its job i.e. throwing the pinion forward and it is, you may want to consider replacing the drive mechanism. It's a fiddly job involving complete dismantling of the starter motor but the motor might cost £70-90 to replace though a new drive from your local Lucas type supplier might be about £25
Hope this is of use
