Anyone got any advice?

what engine are you after?
depends on your budget really i suppose. I have ordered one from elite which is being fitted this week. quite a few people on here have had them and heard good reports. Tis a relatively cheap option too at £680 for a 1.9dg and comes with a 2 year warranty.
there are other options too. sure others will be alogn with their experiences soon

I had to wait 6 weeks for my engine to be built. They're doing free fitting if you take you bus to them also, should be too difficult for you...

My engine has hopefully arrived today and then it'll be fitted in time for my hols next week. Steve at Gasure is fitting mine for me though.

Can't help thinking some corners must have been cut to rebuild a waterboxer, and make a profit on it at 680 quid, gaskets and seals alone cost at least a hundred, then piston rings, all bearings, valves, valve guides, head work, water pump, oil pump, do they chance it with the old cam and lifters? they must do for that money.
just can't see em being that good myself.

I got a DG from Elite a couple of months ago and its been fine since. Although the total price was £1000 not £680 (they found lots of extra bits that needed replacing).

I don't think elite should be discussed unless they are invited on here to defend themselves from guesswork and suppositions.

if there work is bad then the results would be obvious

To rebuild my 2.1 which had done 210 thou km [ok, the cam was shagged, this might not be the case with all engines needing a rebuild] it cost over 500 quid in parts, all stuff which i deemed to be in need of replacing, going by the vw manual service limits.
alot of jobs like honing barrels, fitting new exh. valve guides and re-cutting all valve seats were done by a mate in the trade as a favour, which kept costs down and was stuff i wouldn't have a clue about doing myself.
not trying to knock elite, Phredd, just saying they sound cheap when i think of what i ended up spending, obviously all engines need varying amounts doing to them to bring them back to something like acceptable condition, but most of our 20 year old or so engines are going to have done at least 100 thou miles, some of them while owned by less than careful owners, there's a lot of variables when rebuilding an engine, one may only need a couple of hundred spending on it, another may need a lot more.

Ummmm, well that's kind of the point isn't it? They average the price out and charge £680.

i have re built alsorts of engines and often i find that most things are still with in the manufacture's tolerence's!! plus every now and a agian bad engine will have loads of good parts to put on others!!! plus i bet they get gasket sets for a lot less that you or i can!!
